I woke up without a care in the world. I wasn't working, the sun was shining and my blue gingham dress was CUTE! Some time ago, I picked up a few yards of shirred gingham fabric. I had a few ideas of what it could become, but nothing definite. I just knew it was on sale and perfectly matched some gingham that I purchased last year. I sat it to the side and began executing other projects that had to make the trip to Philadelphia. Then, IT HIT ME!
Nothing would serve justice to that fabric better than a cute little sundress. To create it, I free-styled the pattern! Using my bust and hip measurements (in inches), I drafted the front pattern piece. Using only a fourth of my bust measurement, I marked that length from the fold of the fabric to the free edge. I also took the measurement from the length of my bust to hip, such that I would know how far to move down the fabric in order to mark my hip measurement. Using the fourth of my hip measurement, I marked the appropriate width of hips starting from the fold of the fabric. Using my hip curve ruler, I joined the end of my markings to create the shape of the dress. After a few quick stitches, it fit perfectly. However, it was too long for my taste......and I knew exactly what to do with the excess fabric!
I created off-shoulder belled sleeves! Using four large squares that I salvaged from hem of the dress, I stitched together two squares per sleeve. I measured four pieces of 1/4" elastic to fit the tops and bottoms of the sleeves, as desired. I inserted the elastic, respectively, and attached the sleeves to the sides of the dress. In just 1.5 hours, I created the most dainty sundress. I completed my look with a pair of my favorite pink heeled sandals and earrings.....JUST TO GO SHOPPING ON FABRIC ROW IN PHILLY!!!
