Retro Babe! Vogue's 1651

Retro. That was the first thing that came to mind when I first laid eyes on this pattern. It's so hottttttt! The collar, sleeves and pleat are everything! At least once a year, I need a white dress. This go 'round, I was making my own. So, Vogue's 1651 definitely came on the scene right on time. The dress was fairly easy to make, but the issues I faced were probably self-induced. Let's just take in this goodness for a second before I give you the real...

Now that we've gotten that out of the way, let's talk fabric choices. The pattern suggests medium weight wools, crepe and challis. However, I had my heart set on this lightweight scuba knit from Joann Fabrics. I loved the way it felt and I knew it would have a nice swing. Although my desires were met, this pattern called for pockets. The addition of pockets in this scuba knit added weight that felt as if pebbles were in my pockets. I absolutely disliked the pull of the pockets. After much contemplation, I left them in....but I do not recommend the addition of pockets if using a knit fabric.

My next AND BIGGEST ISSUE was the facing around the hem. The pull was simply overwhelming. It distorted the shape, pleat and swing of the dress. MY GOODNESS! I am sure that this would not have been an issue if I had not chosen a knit fabric.

In true Stacie fashion, I wore my dress to the event and acted as if all was perfect. HOWEVER, as soon as I returned home, I politely removed the facing and hemmed my dress as normal. That in itself corrected 95% of the pocket pull. Verdict: I LOVE IT!!! If you make Vogue's 1651, you will too. Just keep in mind the tips on using knits with this pattern!

Til next time! ~SSS
