Picture it, Sicily....I mean Birmingham....healing from surgery. After starting to get cabin fever, I knew exactly how I wanted to spend my birthday. I wanted to get dolled up and dine in with my family. I did just that! In true Stacie fashion, I needed to make a last minute dress. After a quick look, I found 5 yards of Walmart's "Grab and Go" black ribbed knit fabric in my stash. Since I LOVE maxi dresses, I thought this would a great time to hack Simplicity's 9017 view A from a shirt into a floor length gown. Being a tall girl.......long gowns are a MUST!!! After prepping the fabric, I extended the length of the pattern pieces such that they would drape my bandaged foot. I began sewing and became intrigued at the magic of the pattern as the dress was being stitched into wearable art! I really didn't want to wear shape wear underneath, so I added 2.5 inches to each side of the pattern pieces. To my surprise, I tried on the finished garment and learned that I did not need the extra room! Can you say WINNING??? I trimmed the excess fabric and moved on to the hem.
I hung the dress and realized that I'd cut the right side a few inches shorter than the left. Rather than panic, I started to chuckle at the fact that the longer side was on the left.....which was where my foot needed to be hidden. To not blatantly show my "faux pas", I took my french curve ruler and made a nice A-line from the highest to lowest point of the hem.
In the end, the drape was perfect! Simplicity 9017 was a very easy pattern for a girl who wanted to make something cute in a very short amount of time. I highly recommend it! ~SSS
